Woolwich Physiotherapy is happy to provide medical/therapy coverage for the Canadian Sledge Hockey Championships!

Sheila Forler Bauman, a graduate of University of Western Ontario, has been working in the Physiotherapy profession for more than 30 years. In 1993, she opened Woolwich Physiotherapy in her hometown of Elmira, where she continues to practise Physiotherapy with co-owner /colleague Scott Jantzi. Sheila’s primary area of practise is in orthopaedic Physiotherapy, with a special interest in Sport Physio. She holds a certificate in Sports Physiotherapy and has worked extensively with a wide variety of port organisations. From 2006 to 2016 Sheila was the head Physiotherapist for Wheelchair Basketball Canada, Women’s Program. She was thrilled to be part of the Paralympic Games in Beijing (2008), London (2012) and Rio (2016), as a Physiotherapist for Wheelchair Basketball Canada.

Scott Jantzi graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2005 after completing his B.Sc. Kinesiology, co-op program. Scott then graduated from McMaster University in 2007 with his M.Sc. Physical Therapy and has been practicing at Woolwich Physiotherapy ever since, becoming co-owner of the practise in 2013. Scott has a keen interest in manual therapy and has taken several post-graduate courses to develop his skills in manual therapy. He has also taken additional courses in acupuncture and dry needling. He has a particular interest in treatment of the shoulder and neck region, as well as rehabilitation following concussion. Scott has always had a keen interest in sports and is excited to be part of the medical team for this Sledge Hockey event.

Kaela Newman is a registered physiotherapist who works with a mixture of orthopaedic and neurological injuries at Woolwich Physiotherapy. As a sport first responder she has begun covering a variety of sports- most recently, the Muskoka Ironman triathlon and sledge hockey for the Ontario Winter Games. She has been involved as an athlete in hockey, field hockey, lacrosse and soccer. Kaela has continued with her love of hockey as an assistant coach for a girls rep hockey team and acts as on ice volunteer with a special hockey program in Woolwich, The Sunrays.

Katie Mitchell completed an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University, an advanced certificate of Athletic Therapy, from Mount Royal University, and a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Queen’s University. Currently, she is working towards a PhD in Kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University, with a focus on the assessment of balance control and cognitive-motor integration for youth and young adults with sport-related concussion. Katie is also the Head Athletic Therapist for the Waterloo County Rugby Football Club and has worked with various teams including OUA Men’s Rugby and CIS Women’s Hockey. She is presently the head therapist for Sledge Hockey Ontario.

Christine Jeary, a certified Athletic Therapist, is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg (B.Sc. Athletic Therapy, 2018). She also holds a Kinesiology degree from Wilfred Laurier University. (2014). Christine is currently enjoying using her expertise as an athletic therapist in a number of areas, including clinical practice, bracing and as team therapist for a junior B hockey team.

Joining our team for this event are Dan Southwell, Laura Snoek and Amanda Raguseo:

Dan Southwell is a registered physiotherapist working at Grand River Physiotherapy in Fergus, ON, where he treats patients with orthopaedic and sports related injuries. Dan is a certified sports first responder and is currently working towards his sports physiotherapy certification. He has provided medical coverage with the Elmira Sugar Kings Jr.B hockey club, Ontario Winter Games sledge hockey tournament, and the Muskoka 70.3 Ironman triathlon. 

 

Laura Snoek is a registered physiotherapist and certified athletic therapist. In the past she has worked with Toronto FC Academy, Vancouver Whitecaps Academy, FC London, and as part of the medical services team at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in British Columbia. She currently practices in Wingham Ontario, focusing on orthopedics and rural health. Laura played varsity soccer throughout her university years and continues to enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor recreation activities.

 

Amanda Raguseo graduated from the University of Toronto with her MSc. In Physiotherapy in 2017. She is currently working at a clinic in Etobicoke which specializes in complex Orthopaedics and Neurological conditions. Her sport physio experience to date has included coverage of speed skating, beach volleyball and rugby. Amanda has always been involved in sport herself, participating in soccer, volleyball, basketball and multiple other sports.

Waivers: All athletes and team staff are required to complete a participation agreement waiver.

This document will be sent out via email. All signed waivers will need to be submitted to registration on Thursday May 9, 2019 upon team arrival. 

 

Locker Rooms: Assigned for the duration of the event. Equipment may be moved to the venue Thursday May 9, 2019. Organizers will assist with equipment transportation as part of shuttle services. Please register for shuttle services.

Bottle water & snacks will be provided in the locker rooms.

Fill station for water bottles is to the right of the concession on the main level.

A separate female locker room will be provided.

 

Equipment:  Unique Inventions will be on site Friday and Saturday May 10 & 11, 2019 to provide

Athlete sledge & stick services. Unique Inventions is Ontario’s primary sledge provider. www.uniqueinventionsinc.com/about/

 

Information: Pre-game warm up is 15 minutes with no flood post warm up. Fifteen minute floods between each period. No access to ice during floods, doors must remain closed until the ice machine has left the ice. Pucks will be provided.

 

Schedule: The schedule will be sent with the information package in April. Games will be held Friday May 10, 2019 between 8 a.m. & 8:00 p.m., Saturday May 11, 2019 8 a.m. & 8:00 p.m., Sunday May 12, 2019 8 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.

Volunteer Host: Each team will be assigned a volunteer host who will be available to your team for the duration of the event to assist with team needs, supporting a great event experience. They can help with finding local vendors and tourism.

 

Meals:  Hotels offer breakfast included with your accommodation.

             

Snacks & simple lunches will be provided at no cost to athletes and team staff in the community room on site. This room will be a shared team lounge. Times will be determined to accommodate game schedules. Food items will be provided for eating in the room as well as take out.

 

On site food concessions are available on both the main and upper level of the facility. The host sledge hockey club is operating the upstairs concession. Please support them!

 

Restaurants:

In Elmira – Cross Roads Restaurant offers both a buffet and menu option, Swiss Chalet & Harvey’s, Pita Pit, McDonalds, Central Tavern (does not have accessible washroom), Sip & Bite (not w/c accessible), Donut & Deli (limited accessibility), Elmira Legion - must pre book a few weeks ahead for team meals.

 

St Jacobs (5 minute drive) – Harvest Moon and Jacob’s Grill are both accessible.

 

Near Homewood Suites Hotel:

Approx. 5 minute walk – Jack’s Family restaurant (accessible), Farmers Market (Sat. 7-3 only)

Approx. 10 minute walk – Arby’s, McDonalds (in Walmart), Crazy Canuck,
